Yuna D. Kaito (ユナ・D・海渡, Yuna Dī Kaito) is one of the new characters of the Clear Card Arc. He is the caretaker of Akiho Shinomoto, who simply calls him by his last name. His name came from the gemstone Unakite (ユナカイト, YunaKaito) .

Appearance

Yuna is a tall and slim, dark-haired, young man. He has a young face with purple-lavender eyes.

He wears a formal suit, including an unusual pocket watch which he holds dear.

Personality

Yuna appears to be rather polite and almost a little clueless. However, the "D" in his name indicates that he is a top-level magician of vast magical power and skill.

Throughout the series, he always appeared mysterious and full of intrigue but at the end it was revealed that he was someone who deeply cared for Akiho because he was willing to give up himself for her.

Background

Before Clear Card Arc

Yuna is an orphan who was separated from his parents soon after birth. Late realizing that he had no blood-relatives to speak of. He decided that it would be best for him to stay away from people.

Later, Yuna met a British association of powerful wizards who wanted him, in order to utilize his magic to help them. He didn't want to help anyone and considered it bothersome to do something for others, but he didn't have any strong aversions to the idea and simply agreed; going along with it.

Yuna continued to grow ever much stronger in power and therefore, he gained new magical abilities. He wasn't stronger than those close to him, but he became more powerful than those who lived in far away lands.

One day, the wizards of the association talked about a magical object they had created, and Akiho from another European clan of magicians had been born without any magical ability; something that Yuna himself had confirmed.

When the clan and the association come together to turn the girl into a magical tool, it was decided that it was best to let her travel the world and read herself the magical books that will be recorded onto her. So, Yuna offers himself to be the guardian of the girl and accompany her on her trips.

At some point, Yuna went against the wishes of the association, betrayed his clan stealing the magical object that they had created, he took Akiho from her clan and fled with her to Tomoeda.

Clear Card Arc

Posing as simple butler, Yuna D. Kaito began to watch over Sakura Kinomoto who was subconsciously creating the Clear Cards as her magic was getting increasingly stronger and chaotic.

Kaito occasionally intervenes in situations that lead Sakura to create new cards and when Akiho's book is suddenly activated. On certain occasions, he is discovered by Sakura and Syaoran, however, Kaito is always able to turn back time to erase said events. His identity is finally exposed when Sakura manages to use Siege to protect her memory from Kaito's time magic.

Yuna wants Sakura to create specific cards, one that allows him to utilize the full powers of Alice in Clockland to work forbidden magics, because of his desires wishes for Akiho to have a happily life with a family and free her from her role as a magical tool, something Kaito blamed himself for.

On the day of The Two Alices school play, Kaito takes Sakura and Akiho into the world of Alice in Clockland to finally carry out his final plan.

Thanks to the book, the world is rewritten by a taboo magic, while the Exchange card allowed Kaito to exchange his magic tool with Akiho's, passing all the spells she had registered in the book inside her to his own person. Akiho became Sakura's twin sister and lived in Sakura's house, also everyone completely forgot about Kaito's existence.

The Seal of D. that the clan and the association had placed on Kaito to prevent him from misusing the power within Akiho ends up sealing Kaito away from the world.

Only the pocket watch that was important to Akiho remained, until Sakura realized the pocket watch actually belonged to someone very dear to Akiho who is now gone. When Sakura and Syaoran decide to set off in search of this person, Syaoran uses the watch along with his Rashinban to follow the magical trail of the watch's original owner, leading them to a kind of time prison behind an illusion of the moon.

When Sakura summons Rewind to return Yuna from his dragon form back to his human form. The card combines its power with the magic watch that Akiho brought to achieve it, although due to how powerful the spell that trapped Kaito was, he did not completely free himself and retained his dragon wings. Akiho manages to understand what Kaito did, reproaching him for making that decision for her and also disappearing from her life.

In the end, the two agree to let Sakura return their lives to what they were before and also erase their existence from the memories of the Clan and the Society. To achieve this, Sakura together with Yelan Li activate the book that was still inside Kaito, creating the Blank card. What remained of the book ended up abandoning Kaito and became contained within real books that would later end up in the library of the Kinomoto house.

When Sakura manages to return the world to what it was before, Kaito reveals that he is still suffering from the effects of having used time magic, so Akiho decides to embark with him on a new journey to find a way to cure him.

Relationships

Lilie Shinomoto

She was a great friend of his, who had warned him to never forget what was truly important to him, no matter what methods he would use to realize his wish. However, his desire for even greater power is not enough for him to take her words seriously.

Akiho Shinomoto

"Isn't that what makes her so endearing?"

Yuna is Akiho's caretaker. In truth, he is merely wishing for her happiness, his goal is to accomplish modifying the full strength of the forbidden magical artifact that engraved within Akiho.

His goal was accomplished but at the cost of his existence. Kaito didn't mind too much because he thought Akiho didn't need him in her life for her to be happy.

During his chase with Sakura and Akiho, Sakura confirmed his feelings for Akiho.

At the end of the series they become a couple after he reveals his real name to her.

Sakura Kinomoto

Formally acquainted, Yuna expressed his admiration for Sakura's character. Without knowledge of Sakura, Yuna knows everything about her and her family. He ultimately intends to confront her directly once she creates the cards he desires to use.

Momo

"Your effort is appreciated."

Yuna is the only one who has been seen to communicate with Momo so far. Both are of the consensus that they need to keep an eye on Akiho.

Syaoran Li

"Your powers have grown in such a short time. No wonder you're next in line to lead the Li clan."

He encounters him on his way from coming to pick up Akiho after shopping. He apologizes for his manners and introduces himself. He many have intentionally allowed Syaoran to detect his innate magical ability and strength.

In the manga, he fought the young man off for a time and commends him on how much his mystical abilities has grown in such a short time. He had, however, revealed his intentions before resetting time again.

At the end of the story, Kaito expressed hope that Syaoran would not make the same mistake as him and protect Sakura well. He wants to teach Syaoran to use time magic, the two also exchanged phone numbers.

Nadeshiko Kinomoto

"You've passed away, but you are stronger than ever."

He is started by the sudden appearance of the spirit of Touya and Sakura's late mother during Parents' Day. She calls forth a memory from his time with the English magic society, and reminds him how he considered Lilie Shinomoto, her own best childhood friend, a very good friend. She warns him to remember what Lilie had said to him before her death, to which Kaito says he does not understand what she meant.

Nadeshiko informs him that it was she who had chosen that particular house for her children to live in. Kaito then reveals that he is on the verge of becoming what she is, a spirit/ghost.

Powers and Abilities

• Magical Power-Level: His innate magical power and prowess is indeed immensely strong, being ranked topmost in the association of magic users of "D". Yuna is said to be more powerful than Eriol Hiiragizawa and Yelan Li. His magic aura is violet like his eyes.
• Time Magic: Thanks to his magical pocket watch, Kaito is able to use magic to stop, even go back in time and lose memories of others individuals.

The pocket watch that allows him to effectively control and manipulate the present to his will.

• Deflection Shield: Being a D sorcerer, he is capable of deflecting and reflecting even the strongest mystical attacks of any type with relative ease.

• Magic Circle: Colored a dark purple that has some unidentified symbol on it, but which matches the pattern on his pocket watch. He had used it to sever the strong link of magical communication between Cerberus, Yue, and Eriol in Episode 21 from a large distance. He can also use it for spying on his enemies.
• Sleep Inducement: At times, he makes Akiho go unconscious.
• Teleportation: He is capable of teleporting over vast distances with ease.
• Size Manipulation: He can shrink down Sakura to the size of a insect.
• Spiritual Recognition: He is capable of perceiving the spirit of Nadeshiko.
• Divination Precognition: He can manage a few glimpses into the future if I'm careful to follow the right steps, of course, but he could never dream to be as accurate as a proper oracle.
• Silence Inducement: He is capable of silencing Syaoran, to stop him from telling Sakura that he is after her and her cards.

Etymology

• Yuna's given name (ユナ) means "Dark River" in Tupi, a Brazilian aboriginal language; while his last name, "Kaito" (海渡) means "marine" in Japanese.
• Individually, the kanji for "海" means "sea" and "渡" means "transit, ferry, crossing" or "migrate".
• At the end of the Clear Card arc Chapter 80, Kaito revealed to Akiho his real name is Cristaux, (結晶, Kesshō) meaning Crystal stone.

• The "D" in Yuna's name indicates that he is one of the strongest and most dangerous magicians in a Magicians' Society with sinister intentions. Eriol warns that there are unsavory rumors surrounding this organization.
  • Cerberus and Yue learn from Eriol that Yuna has been kicked out of the magicians' society due to the fact that he stole an extremely powerful and ancient magical object that is forbidden to be used to its full potential.
• Yuna's favorite flower Lily is similar to Lilie's name in Latin language .
• He encounters the spirit of Touya and Sakura's late mother for the first time.
• He eventually casts a tongue-tying spell on Syaoran to stop him from telling Sakura about him and his ulterior motives concerning her.
